January 2010
This is the reading list
for the 2010 MSc course on Growth, Trade and
Structural Change. The course will aim to provide you with
Readings marked (*) are
especially useful and the essential ones are marked (**). Especially difficult,
but worthwhile, articles are marked (+) and should only be read after the more
basic readings.
This
is a long reading list and you shouldn’t try to read everything. The best strategy
would be to start with the introductory reading and find books that suit your
tastes. Please note that in the case of books, I have usually specified a
particular chapter or set of pages.
You should pay especial
attention to the sections of the readings that will help you to analyze and
think about growth in a structured way. These sections will generally be
those that make use of formal models, particular diagrams, or statistical
evidence.
The online version of
the reading list, available via Blackboard, contains links to PDFs for many of
the journal articles listed below. Alternatively, you can find them via the
“Electronic Journals” section of the library website, starting from this
address:
Other readings are
usually available in the Library, but some copies may be in the short loan
collection (SLC) or perhaps available only via the issue desk (SLC ID).
Introductory reading
This first section
covers reading materials that will be especially useful if you have little
prior training in economics.
If you have a less
strong background in economics, you might want to start by concentrating on the
textbooks by Jones and Weil, before turning to Helpman
and Easterly. You should read these books before turning to the key
references (marked as **) on the main reading list.
